Joshua Jays beste konkurransetips

nordisk mesterskap i trylling

(In English: Here are Joshua Jay’s three tips for magicians who are going to compete in a magic contest!)

First tip: Be prepared!
I have watched many, many magic competitions on many levels, and I’m always struck by how unprepared so many contestants are. It’s often clear that an act-even if it is novel-has not been practiced enough or performed in front of a real audience. Both private rehearsal and performances in front of audiences are essential during your preparation.
Proper rehearsal helps in two ways.
· First, it reduces stress; the more you practice the less you worry about the «little» things.
· Second, it all but eliminates accidents and glitches because these problems occur in practice or trial runs and can be smoothed out for competition performance. Imagine going into a competition without stress or fear of an accident … that’s a huge advantage. The solution … practice!

Second Tip. Be entertaining!
Themes are fashionable in competition acts, and so are crazy, difficult, and original magic. But if you’re not entertaining and engaging, you haven’t served your first purpose as a magician.
Never lose sight of the simple entertainment value of an act during your path to originality or lofty ideas.

Last Tip. Get feedback from judges!
Some competitions don’t offer conferences between the judges and the participants, and some don’t even share the feedback and scores. To me, this is crazy. Competitions are less about determining who is best and more about improving acts.
Whether you win or lose, you MUST seek out judges and, if possible, the notes they made during your act. Find out what parts they liked, what the didn’t like, and what THEY think you can do better. This not only makes you a better magician, but helps your chances for the next competition.
